My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. —Proverbs 1:10
One of the biggest challenges to any tween/teen is the need to conform. The pressure to “fit in” in contemporary society is almost overwhelming, which is really ironic given the number of non-conformists out there. If you’re not a rebel, you don’t fit in.
The Bible is incredible in many ways, one of which is the fact that the lessons it teaches are still relevant and powerful. Here in Proverbs, we see a lesson about murder, or gang warfare as we’d call it today, but there’s an even greater picture that’s being presented. Wise people don’t follow the dictates of others, regardless of the amount of pressure that put upon them.
So many young men join gangs trying to avoid getting “jumped”. So many girls have sex just to fit in, treating their virginity like it’s a curse. So many adults go against their conscience because of political or financial pressure.
But God challenges us to turn our back on what others say if it leads us away from Him. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. It is for us to have the courage to stand up for what is right, and say “no” to the crowd.
Don’t conform to the image of sin. Be transformed by the power of God and rise above the pull of darkness.
